Perhaps Held Before Paper…is now in print!

It’s a dream come true! MMWG member, Angela Simmons, has been writing poems for eons. Well, maybe not that long, but you know what I mean. She was recently recognized as a poet of distinction, having been selected as the winner of the inaugural Sharon Drummond Memorial Chapbook Prize for Poetry.Manitoba Parks

Now Angie’s poetry, or at least some of her poetry, is now contained within the covers of Perhaps Held Before Paper, a spanking new chapbook published by Rubicon Press. The Writers Guild of Alberta put on a splashy event in honour of the occasion at Shelf Life Books in Calgary. (BTW, what a great little bookstore it is!) A good crowd came out for the event, many of them friends and family of Sharon Drummond, a once very active member of the WGA and a wonderful poet herself. Sadly, Sharon passed away in 2005, but her poetry and dedication to the craft of poetry live on.

We thought we’d immortalize the event on our MMWG website with some photos, so here goes…

Angie’s Chapbook Launch

Hurrah for MMWG member, Angela Simmons!Perhaps Held Before Paper cover

Angie is the inaugural winner of the Sharon Drummond Chapbook Prize, a poetry competition presented by the Writers Guild of Alberta. To celebrate this achievement, there will be a launch of a chapbook, published by Rubicon Press, featuring Angie’s poetry.

The launch event takes place this Saturday, Sept. 28th, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Shelf Life Books in Calgary. In addition to being treated to hearing Angie read from her new poetry chapbook, Perhaps Held Before Paper, you’ll also be treated to some yummy eats.

Really, does it any get any better than this?

For more information about this landmark event, check out the Writers Guild of Alberta web page here. Hope you can be with us to celebrate Angie’s big win and new chapbook.

Andie’s Art Show!

It’s been nearly two years since MMWG published Hope in the Colour of Orange: Dutch Civilian Memories of War and Liberation. This book project ended up being a huge success, and, of course, we have our many contributors to thank for that. Andie's Screen Shot 2013-08-21 at 10.06.47 AM

One of our contributors was Andie C. Wicherts. Not only did Andie share her story, Hiding, with us, she also shared her wonderful art. We are most grateful that Andie let us include several images of her paintings in our book.

Now Bluerock Gallery, in Black Diamond, Alberta (the cool little town where MMWG is based) is putting on an exhibition of Andie’s art. It all starts this coming Saturday, August 24 and runs for a month until September 26.

If you can, please try to make it out to the opening artist’s reception of the show, Andie Wicherts: Joy Around Me, set for:

4 – 7 pm, Saturday, August 24, 2013

A new review, and Bonfire goes to the beach…

“I just finished reading Bonfire and found it extraordinary. Your balance of factual and emotional, along with making the narration truly believable had me cheering for you throughout the book. Congratulations on a wonderful piece of writing, and if I was “wrung out” after reading it, I can only imagine what you must have felt when completing it! One comment – I found the Epilogue exceedingly good, and very important; it is a must read for its inspirational message – wish it could somehow be expressed in a Foreword message.” – Linda Humphreys
